Pets Stories

In collaboration with Plataforma Proanimal Portugal

During my stay and travels in the Douro region in Portugal, situated in the centre in the northern part of the country, I became highly aware of the difficult situation of stray cats and dogs and decided to partner with animal shelter Plataforma Proanimal in Vila Real, Portugal.

About Plataforma Proanimal

The project Plataforma Proanimal began on 21 January 2008 with the aim of helping street animals in the municipality of Vila Real. It is made up of a very small group of volunteers whose desire to help is immense.

The main objectives of the Plataforma Proanimal are:

  • To help street animals at risk;
  • Create a dynamic of effective adoptions;
  • To control overpopulation in cat colonies and street packs through CED (capture, sterilise, return);
  • Raising public awareness through actions in schools, direct contact with people and the media.

Animals usually stay with Temporary Foster Families before they are adopted and if not suitable for adoption, after castration they are returned to their colony where they initially come from.

Recent Success Stories

This little panther boy is part of a litter of 6 brothers (PUDIM, MUFFIN and 3 others), captured during a call for help for a black kitten who ended up dying. They found another cat in a very bad state (also, unfortunately, there was nothing we could do), and 2 more cats (one of them the mother of these babies), both already sterilised and in recovery.

CUPCAKE and his brothers had fleas and the 5 brothers are still being treated, as they are very thin (later they will also be put up for adoption).

From the look of her injuries, she was probably attacked by another cat who pierced her left eye and made an abscess in her neck, which got infected, burst and gave rise to a wound. This little girl has now fully recovered from her past suffering.

She lost one eye, but that won’t stop her from living a perfectly normal life. She has already been discharged from hospital and is now in a temporary forster family.

Now VITORIA is receiving lots of pampering and affection in the comfort of her own home.

Their Story: Plataforma Proanimal received a request for help for 2 baby dogs aged around 2 months, in some yard near in Vila Real. The area is very difficult to access. But after several attempts, they were saved and stayed with a foster family. They were dewormed internally and externally, vaccinated and chipped.
